I would like to welcome Jonathan Curran to NAG today. He is here to talk about how:
A good writer who can hold the audience with his oratory skills is a sight to witness. A set of skills similar to writing combined with a natural talent of being able to interact and understand the feel of the audience is a sure shot formula for becoming a successful speaker.
Magic Starts When an Author Learns the Art of Motivating Others
A successful writer is one who has complete control over his/her words and can come down to the level of the reader or listener. When a writer speaks, the audience is invited to take a journey with him/her. Once s/he is able to connect with his/her audience, s/he can sell a comb to a bald man, for all it takes.
Although speaking and writing go hand in hand, you have to have a natural talent for storytelling and cracking jokes to be able to make a lasting impression on the listeners.
There are no fixed set of rules that can confirm instant success for a writer as a motivational speaker. Let’s have a look at some of the things that help while travelling this long road to fame.
1. Common Hurdles Faced By Writers
The most common problem faced by speakers is a ‘disconnect’ between the mind and speech.
The mind might be working faster than the speech is capable of delivering. In the process, you tend to lose momentum and a few words here and there.
In the effort to be to-the-point, speakers on occasions start rambling or start talking too much or too fast. That leaves the audience confused and disinterested.
Ability to concentrate is a very important requirement to be able to hit the nail on the head, and at the right time.
Scatterbrains stand little chance at being successful at this trade.
2. Practice and Practice
We cannot emphasize the need for practice enough; it is the best way and the only way.
But you sure need some natural inborn talent to make you stand apart from the rest and have your own edge. You can adapt to technicalities, but you will surely need a good set of natural skills to be able to last out.
You can either be a good speaker and a good writer or a good writer who speaks well or both. Practice will defiantly help in grooming the speaking skill to large extent.
3. Writing and Speaking are interconnected
It is known globally that people, who write well, will be able to express the content better as they have a deep knowledge of the meaning and the vocabulary.
Although reading, speaking and writing are interconnected, they are also equally different in their basics. But since writers have a good reading and speaking ability, they tend to be better speakers.
You can have a look on some business authors here who became business speakers and using their magic of writing in speaking.
4. Depends on the Audience
Speaking is like a two way road with the audience; if they don’t agree to walk half way, you are just jabbering with the walls.
An audience that has the same level of vocabulary like the speaker will have no trouble in connecting with the speaker right away.
5. Feel the Words
A speaker has to come across with complete conviction for the audience to be able to believe in his commitment.
The ‘feel factor’ is very important to make it sound real and alive and not like a boring narration. You have to fit the words like a perfect jig saw puzzle, with no room for errors or misplaced pieces.
Only a writer will be able to juggle the words, edit, re-write and repeat the process until he gets the perfect write up he believes in. When you hear a writer speak, most of the times he sound well.
6. Have patience
It’s a long road to success and you know it.
It is okay to experience rejection a few times to have the realization that the stage won’t actually bite you. Learn from your mistakes. The anxiety will soon disappear in thin air. Listen the words in your own head and practice as you go out for a morning walk, watch TV or simply stand still in the balcony.
Even if you’re hell of a writer, you’d have to wait until public speaking comes as naturally to you as a writer. Just remember that if you know your way around words, it’s going to be less difficult.
Here are world’s leading motivational speakers and some of them are really very good authors in Motivation, Sports, Adventure and Internet Marketing. They are using their magic of words in the universe of speaking.
